Published by db2dba under Garmin News

EcoRoute Garmin’s ecoRoute can help you save gas and money through fuel-efficient navigation, starting as soon as you download it to your compatible Garmin device. Now available as a free and simple download through www.garmin.com/ecoroute, this software update gives you valuable options and information.

And you can customize your nüvi to fit your vehicle by accessing the “vehicle profile” under ecoRoute in the tools menu. There, you can enter your car’s fuel economy and the current price of gas to help nüvi better calculate your savings. 20-year stories: Preserving pieces of Garmin history

Published by db2dba under Garmin News

In celebration of Garmin’s 20-year anniversary in 2009, we’re reaching back to the past to bring you stories from our younger years. Today you’ll get a peek inside a garage-turned-Garmin museum. The caretaker and archivist is Frank, a long-time Garmin employee who “likes to collect history he can hold in his hands.” He started collecting antique radios in the mid-70s. Before he started his job in aviation engineering for Garmin in October 1995, Frank worked for another avionics manufacturer where he shared a lab with Garmin co-founders Gary Burrell, Min Kao and two of their business partners.

Frank’s passion for preservation sent him digging through dumpsters in his early days at Garmin.  “When we moved from Lenexa, there was a lot of stuff thrown away and my collecting instincts just took over. Over the years, people have given me stuff that they wanted to get rid of, so I had a lot of help,” Frank said.

Photo 55 (Frank @ Widmer) From prototype units to tradeshow displays, signs, photos, employee cards and even a couple of interoffice mail envelopes with the co-founders’ signatures — Frank has a lot of little pieces of Garmin history. All artfully displayed and carefully catalogued in a climate-controlled room, which used to serve as an attached garage for his home. Frank doesn’t know exactly how much time he puts into maintaining his Garmin collection and library, but he did say he spends a lot of time in this 525 square-foot room. As you step into the space, it’s obvious this guy has been doing what he loves for nearly 14 years. He probably doesn’t even call Garmin his “job” or “work.” More like the means to the end he ultimately enjoys — creating products that improve customers’ lives today and then become history he can hold in his hands later.

If you didn’t get a chance to see the first story and video in our 20-year anniversary series, check out this piece, “Garmin goes to the Gulf.”

Published by lopezadmin under MBlog

UPDATE 10 MARCH 2009: In case you were wondering, the ANT Agent is compatible on the Mac. The only limitation is sending Courses and Workouts from Garmin Connect to the FR405. This is also a limitation on the PC.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi all, with different updates being spread across the Internets from non-Garmin folk . . . this is the latest official information we have:
Mac support for the ANT Agent is now projected for the first quarter of 2009.  We are very sorry for this unexpected delay.  Unfortunately, a hardware provider was delayed with the shipment of key elements necessary for the implementation of the Agent.
Thanks for your patience.
Today is the last day of Mobile World Congress and it’s been a whirlwind.  From meetings with carriers to press interviews, the Garmin-Asus booth has been a beehive of activity. One of the great things about the show this year is that it’s the first time the public has had a chance to press buttons on a nüvifone and see how we integrate location-based information compared to others. From the beginning we’ve said the
nüvifone series would integrate location in a new way, but “integrate” is an overused word in marketing-speak and therefore makes it difficult to describe the nüvifone experience until actually trying the phone. For example, if you open a contact’s name on a nüvifone, you’ll have three primary options: call, text and go.  The call and text choices are traditional options found on most phones, but if you press “go” it launches the navigation screen and you’ll be navigating to the contact’s address.  Another example is having the nüvifone’s location integrated with the calendar. You can find an event in the area via the “upcoming events” option, then add it to the calendar with the click of a button. When it’s time to attend the event, your calendar will prompt you of the event and then you can navigate to the event by touching a button on the calendar page. The nüvifone product line is reinventing how phones do navigation and they truly are phones for the location-based life.
